The 18-year-old was driving near the intersection of 6th and Spring streets just before 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, when another driver pulled up next to him and opened fire, Reading police said.

He was struck once in the jaw, but remained conscious and drove to a nearby McDonalds to call for help, officials said. His girlfriend sitting in the passenger seat was not injured, the report adds.

The victim was able to give a statement to police, and was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, the department said. His condition as of Friday afternoon was not immediately clear.

Authorities suspect road rage played a role, though they say there is no threat to the general public. The incident remains under investigation.
